Different between BIAS and RADIAL tyres ?
Why different types of tyres needed?
Industries are producing different types of tyres according to their purposes and required characteristics. Basically in India, we know,
- Tube tyres.
- Tube-less tyres.
Other than this, we need to know the basic two construction tyes of tyres,
- Bias construction tyre.
- Radial construction tyre.
This is differentiated by the belt construction and different cord material. A tyre has many parts like a crown, sidewall, beads, thread, and plies. According to the material and placing angle, these two-types are derived.
What is Bias?
The bias tyre has nylon belt material. The belt is placed 35 - 45 degree angle to the tire tread. It is placed like an inter-locking block section. It has multiple rubber plies overlapping each other. By these plies, the tyre tread and sidewalls are being connected. Thus it creates dependent sidewalls movements.
Characteristics of Bias tyre:
- Rigid internal body.
- Dependent sidewall movements.
- Less-contact with the ground.
- Non-bendable sidewalls.
Pros:
- Suitable for off-road.
- High load vehicles can use due to tougher sidewalls.
- Low cost than radial.
Cons:
- Low traction on cornering road compared to radial.
- More wear and tear.
- Less stability at high speed.
What is Radial?
Radial tyres have steel belts. The belts are placed perpendicular (90 degrees) to the tire tread. These make two-lapping move independently. Thus it makes independent sidewall and thread movement. So now the sidewall can be flexed. This makes a uniform bending towards the road.
Characteristics of Radial tyre:
- Independent sidewall movement.
- Flexible body construction.
- More-contact with the ground.
- The sidewall can flex with weight too.
Pros:
- More grip at the cornering too.
- Smooth ride with flexible sidewalls.
- Uniform wear and tear.
Cons:
These are the characteristics and functions of bias and radial type tyres. You can select the tyre based on the load, speed, gripes, toughness, and durability.
